Step-by-step guide to setting up google postmaster tools

Now that you know the importance of Google Postmaster Tools, let’s get you set up.

1. Access Google postmaster tools

Start by heading over to postmaster.google.com.  You’ll need to log in with your Gmail or Google account, which we’ll use to keep your Postmaster Tools data up to date.

2. Add a new domain

Once you’re logged in, look for the “Add +” icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Click on it to begin adding your domain.

3. Enter your domain

In the pop-up box, enter your domain name. This is the domain you send your emails from. After entering the domain, click Next.

4. Verify domain ownership

To prove that you own the domain, Google will provide a unique TXT record. You’ll need to add this TXT record to your domain’s DNS settings. It’s a crucial step that tells Google, “Yes, this domain is mine, and I want to monitor its email performance.” google-site-verification=xxxxx_xx If you’re not sure what all those DNS settings mean, don’t worry. Your domain registrar or IT team can help you out with this, or you can just get in touch with us here at MailSoar—we’re experts in this field.

5. Alternative verification
via CNAME record

If the TXT record doesn’t work for some reason, an alternative authentication method using a CNAME record is offered by Google. Here’s what that might look like:
  • CNAME Label/Host: xxxxx.example.email.com
  • CNAME Destination Target: xxxxx_example
This method is just as effective and might be simpler depending on your setup.

6. Finalize domain
verification

After the TXT or CNAME record has been added to the DNS, you should return to the Google Postmaster Tools dashboard. Hover over your domain, click the More icon, and select Verify. If everything checks out, the domain will be verified, and data collection will begin immediately. Remember, Postmaster Tools only begins collecting data from the moment the domain is verified—it won’t track any past data.

7. Start collecting data

Once your domain is verified, data collection will be initiated by Google Postmaster Tools. Note that this data collection begins from the date of verification and is not retroactive. Tracking this data over time will allow any delivery errors or issues with your sending practices to be diagnosed and rectified.
